Remember picking foxgloves and putting the blossoms on your fingers and almost getting stung because there was a bee inside? Or was that just me?

As I knitted these up, the antique lace pattern started to remind me of those days with my Grandma’s backyard, especially since I chose to knit these in plum. So I named them Foxglove.

Size: The hat is about 20” in circumference and the mittens are Women’s Small/Medium

Difficulty: The lace uses very basic stitches. The crown of the hat is beginner easy and there is nothing particularly complicated about the mittens. If you’ve wanted to knit Norwegian style mittens with an eye to adding in colorwork later on, this is a perfect pattern to get your feet wet with. Both items are knit in the round.

Skills needed: Long tail cast on, Backwards Loop cast on (mittens), basic lace increases and decreases, picking up stitches, three needle bind off or grafting (mittens.)

Yarn: This is good old Cascade 220 worsted weight in Dark Plum. It comes in 3.5 oz (220 yd) skeins and I used 3.25 oz. If you have a rogue skein of something worsted weight lying around you’re good to go.

Needles: Size 7-8 (4.5-5mm) double pointed needles for the crown of the hat and the mittens and 9” circulars for the hat edging.

Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends and Post-its or magnetic board for following the chart. At least 6 stitch markers for decreasing crown, more if you like to use them to keep track of your lace repeats. Scrap yarn for the thumb of the mitten.
