We’re back into the NATO phonetic alphabet series! Fittingly, this kerchief has a little bit in common with the Alfa and Bravo designs, but features a unique approach to construction.

Self-striping yarns or scraps work well with this minimalist design, which is also knit entirely in the round over a few distinct stages or steps. There are only a few technical aspects that will probably need closer attention; a lot of this is stockinette stitch with a few simple increases and decreases.

Materials

  • 264-300 yards of self-striping sock yarn; shown in Urth Yarns Uneek Sock in Colorway 55.
  • 1 24-48” circular needle in US3-5/3.25-3.75mm, or size needed for gauge. Knitting is both flat and in the round, so if you have intermediate needle-lengths, that may work best! Otherwise, magic loop is a useful technique to make a longer needle work.
  • 1 set of 5 DPNs in size needed for gauge
  • 1 spare circular needle, 24-48”, in same size or one size down crochet hook for cast-on, 1.90mm or size suited to yarn
  • Tapestry needle
  • Removable stitch markers

Gauge
Gauge is 24 sts and 38 rows over 4”/10cm of stockinette stitch, worked flat and blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge.
