Once upon a time, a very busy mum got to go on a short yarn-cation (a vacation where the main activities were yarn crafts) to stay with her yarn sister. Their main activity was experimental dying of small (about 50g) lots of merino roving. They decided to continue the experimentation by trying fractal spinning (thus the ‘fractal’ part of the name of this pattern). Feeling pretty pleased with the creative process so far, the next challenge came - choosing a pattern to show off the yarn to good advantage, yet not completely bore the knitter. After extensive and fruitless searching for an existing pattern that pleased, it was decided a new pattern should be created for a fairly narrow scarf, so good length could be achieved with the small amount of yarn. A simple, wave-like (hence the ‘waves’ part of the pattern name) lace pattern was included to prevent the knitter falling asleep while knitting, yet not add too much to the already busy colour changes in the yarn.

Materials:
6.5mm needles
50g DK yarn (the one in the picture is hand dyed, hand spun merino)

Gauge:
Gauge is unimportant in this project, but just to give some idea, the pictured scarf was approximately 15 stitches to 10cm and finished measurements were approximately 130cm x 21cm after blocking.

Stitches used:
knit
purl
knit 2 together
yarn over

Difficulty:
An easy, quick knit for an experienced lace knitter, or a good first project for a beginner
