Frederick
This pattern is for a linen stitch triangle shawl / shawlette. You decide how big you want it to be. There is an option to add a button to the shawlette as well.
Frederick has a garter stitch border and a linen stitch center. Linen stitch will really showcase any yarn. A variegated yarn will shine with this stitch. You can use a single color yarn as well and it will show off the texture of the fabric. Linen stitch is reversible and has two different sides: a smooth side that looks like it was woven and a more textured side.
You can use any smooth yarn in the sport / DK / worsted range: you will need approximately 300 / 250 / 200 yards for a shawlette or 600 / 500 / 400 yards for a bigger shoulder shawl.
If you want a shawl with more drape you can use a yarn made out of bamboo, soy, sugar, silk or a soft acrylic to name a few. You might have to adjust your needle size to accommodate the looseness of the resulting fabric. I would suggest swatching if you choose this option.
I used Schaeffer Miss Priss for my test sample which is an aran / worsted weight yarn which, has unfortunately been discontinued.
You will need a circular needle that is one or two sizes larger then the recommended needle size on the ball band (because linen stitch creates a tight dense fabric, the larger needle size is necessary to avoid a tight fabric without any give.
Regardless of what type of yarn you choose; you might want to do a swatch first to make sure you have the right size needle by knitting the even number of stitches example on page #2.
