Free Wheeling Beanie
I imagined this hat while listening to “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”, the music that rocked my teenage years.
At that time, I was “tracing the road” in northern Europe, and I had knitted myself a beanie in that kind of good thick wool you could easily get there “nearly for nothing”.
It has been a real good companion until I lost it in Hamburg (Germany) … “those were the days” …
So, “Free Wheeling Beanie” is that kind of textured hat, warm and comfy, that is so pleasant to wear for men, women, children, while “tracing the road” …. um … sorry, for walks in the great outdoors!
“Free Wheeling Beanie” is worked in rounds and bottom up.
I used a lovely bulky yarn to knit it, and I am so sorry it is discontinued by now, but I am sure that you will find yourself a lovely warm yarn that fits gauge and will make a great beanie !
This unisex beanie comes in 3 sizes:
Child/teenager (C) 45.5-50 cm/18-20”, length (crown to base of ear) 18,5 cm/7,25” ;
Adult (A) 50.5-55.5 cm/20-23”, length (crown to base of ear) 22 cm/8,66” ;
Large adult (L) 56-61 cm/20-23”, length (crown to base of ear) 23,5 cm/9,25” ;
The length is easily adaptable : for a slouchy beanie, just add one or two more pattern repeat (4 rows).
Please note that this beanie is elastic : if you want it fitted (especially close to the ears), and you hesitate between 2 sizes, I recommend that you choose the smaller size.
Skills needed : cast on, knit in the round, knit, purl, basic decrease techniques.
A chart is provided.
Yarn recommendation: I used Bouton d’Or Steppe, now discontinued. Bouton d’Or Laïka would also be ideal for this beanie.
You will find other yarn suggestions here on YarnSub.

Enfant (E) tour de tête 45.5-50 cm - hauteur (du bas de l’oreille au sommet) 18,5 cm ;
Femme (F) tour de tête 50.5-55,5 cm - hauteur (du bas de l’oreille au sommet) 22 cm ;
