ABOUT THIS PATTERN
This pattern was inspired by the endless fields of ripe wheat stretching all the way to the horizon.
This is what I associate with Ukraine, and this is what allegedly their flag stands for.
I hope you enjoy wearing this shawl while also showing support for the people of Ukraine in view of current events.

CONSTRUCTION
‘Freedom Fields’ shawl is worked in two steps:
1) first the body of the shawl in garter stitch, starting from top left corner and increasing at the end of every right-side row to create triangular shape;
2) once the body is finished, the border is worked separately (in stockinette with stranded colorwork print with travelling twisted stitches resembling ripe wheat; there are come decreases at the top of this section to continue triangular shape of the shawl) and then seamed to the main body of the shawl.
Finally, the shawl is trimmed with an applied I-cord to prevent it from rolling and give a nice finish.

Additional note: this pattern was published within days from being created, I didn’t have time to test it properly yet, so please let me know if you find any mistakes!

Finished size after blocking ~200130 cm/8050”.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS
YARN: fingering weight (~350-400m/380-435yds per 100g/3.5oz) yarn in two colors

• Main color (MC): ~200g/7oz or 700m/765yds
• Contrasting color (CC): ~50g/0.9oz or 150m/165yds

Sample knit out of Gazzal ‘Wool 175’ (100% superwash merino, 175m/190yds per 50g/1.8oz) colorways 325 (MC) and 312 (CC). This was the yarn most readily available to me in the right colors. However, I would suggest using a less smooth (NON-superwash) yarn better suited for colorwork, e.g. Jamieson’s of Shetland ‘Spindrift’ or Jamieson and Smith ‘2ply Jumper Weight’

NEEDLES: two sets of 3.5-3.75mm / US 4-5 OR size to get gauge OR size to get nice drapey fabric with selected yarn (in this case total yardage will vary) circulars on 60-80cm/24-40” cable;
Extra set of double-pointed needles to work applied I-cord in the same or slightly bigger size (depending on your gauge, as it varies a lot for I-cord knitting, but it should be relatively stretchy).

NOTIONS: tapestry needle, scissors, row counter (optional), locking stitch marker (optional).

GAUGE (PER 10 * 10 CM/ 44” AFTER WET BLOCKING)

• Garter stitch: 22 sts by 26 rows
• Colorwork: 24 sts by 26 rows NOTE: gauge is not critical, choose based on your taste, but final size of the shawl and yarn usage may vary.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES

• Classic long-tail cast on
• Garter stitch and stockinette with chain selvedge edges
• Knit-front-and-back (kfb) increase
• Knit two together (k2tog) decrease
• Reading charted instructions
• Stranded colorwork, catching floats
• 1x1 twists (mock cables) in colorwork
• Mock centered double decrease (MCDD) in colorwork
• Applied I-cord .
• Mattress stitch – graft combination seam
