Freeform Christmas Panel
A freeform crochet project to use up some shorter lengths of yarn. I used about 60g of mixed weights: fingering, 4 ply, sport and dk in a colour palette of red/green/yellow plus black and white. Sometimes I used two strands of different yarns together. Although you could keep changing hook size, I prefer to work with a 3.50mm hook for everything. When making a motif, if I ran out of one colour, I simply changed to another to finish the motif. I limited the motifs to 5 relatively simple shapes - do more of the ones you like, less of the ones you don’t like. The motifs are applied to a felt backing. I made the size that would hang well on a door handle, but the size is easily changed. Pattern is written in English and uses UK terminology.

Freeform Christmas Panel - Pattern Notes
This is freeform - anything goes. Don’t worry about following the pattern precisely.
Remember, with crochet, you can make a stitch anywhere.
I found the fingering weight yarn too fine, so I used it alongside a heavier yarn.
You may need to make more motifs to fill the space, depending on the yarns you are using.
The leaf motif is worked along the foundation chain, 3 stitches to turn, and then back along the other side of the foundation chain. Think ‘u’ shape.
The leaf motif is the only one that I darned in loose ends for. For all other motifs, I just tuck the loose ends under and make sure the motif covers them as I stitch it down.
When it comes to stitching the motifs to the felt, I like my stitches to be visible so I use a fairly thick cotton perle in a colour that matches the felt. You may prefer to use a colour that matches the motif or an invisible thread.
