Freeform Motif/Scrumble 2
I created this motif for the express purpose of making a tutorial. It contains not only an introduction to freeform but a chance to try out some popular stitches for those a little uncertain about exactly where to start. The finished piece measures 9” X 11” and could potentially be used as anything from a project embellishment to component of a larger freeform project such as a tote bag or jacket.
Although an intermediate familiarity with crochet is suggested this would be a great introduction to freeform. Once you start to catch on this is a motif that can be modified and/or added to a bit for the purposes of experimentation without negatively impacting the remainder of the design.
I use existing stitches but in a slightly unconventional manner. I have also incorporated some more advanced techniques. They not only add some very nice touches to freeform but are truly valuable in almost all crochet. I also include some general information about freeform and explanations of why I do certain things (tutorial is 21 pgs and includes 48 full-color photos).
Since the tutorial focuses on freeform techniques and not so much on learning individual stitches I don’t include a full stitch tutorial for every stitch. I do include hyperlinks to photo and/or video tutorials on the Internet, however. Here’s what’s included:
Hyperlinks to tutorials on the following:
- Knurl/crab/reverse sc st
- Royal ridge st (also includes 3 pictures)
- Bullion st
- Magic circle
- Standing sc
- Standing hdc
- Chainless starting dc
Written Explanation:
- 4 dc popcorn
- Berry st
Written Explanation and detailed photos:
- Sc between sts
- Working in the round
If you have any questions please don’t be shy. I love talking about freeform (or just about any other type of crochet). I have all sorts of interesting resources stashed on my computer. Its amazing what can be learned from the asking of a simple question (by both the person asking and the person being asked).
