I created this motif to demonstrate a few popular freeform stitches/concepts. It contains a brief introduction to freeform and a chance to try out one of the most popular freeform motifs. The finished piece measures 5” in diameter and could potentially be used as anything from a project embellishment to component of a larger freeform fabric such as a tote bag or jacket.

To replicate the piece you will need:
The yarn indicated.
Small yarn needle
Scissors
Handheld garment steamer/blocking board (optional)

The two more advanced stitches used are the knurl and the bullion. Magic circle and chainless hdc techniques are also used. The construction of the “petals” around the edge uses basic stitches but the technique is somewhat advanced. All of these include either links to tutorials or extensive pictures and explanations.

The tutorial itself is 12 pages long and includes 18 full-color photos.

If you have any questions please don’t be shy. I love talking about freeform (or just about any other type of crochet). I have all sorts of interesting resources stashed on my computer. Its amazing what can be learned from the asking of a simple question (by both the person asking and the person being asked).
