Freeform Swirl Flower
I created this motif to use as part of a larger freeform project. It measures 6.5” X 4.25” and could potentially be used as anything from a project embellishment to component of a large freeform project. The stitches and the shapes are quite versatile. They would be easy to modify as well as work into a larger project. It has good texture but not so much that it couldn’t be worked into a hat or coat.
Although an intermediate familiarity with crochet is suggested this would be a great introduction to freeform. Its small and only uses four colors of yarn. I use existing stitches but in a slightly unconventional manner. I also include some general information about freeform and explanations of why I do certain things (tutorial is 8 pgs) and 14 full-color photos.
Since the tutorial focuses on freeform techniques and not so much on learning individual stitches I include only a written explanation of the following non-basic stitches/techniques. If you are unfamiliar with them you may need to locate a video or extensive photo tutorial focused solely on the stitch/technique There are lots of them available for free:
Cluster Stitch
Royal Ridge Stitch
Knurl/Crab/Reverse sc/Corded ridge Stitch
Magic circle
Standing sc
Standing hdc
If you have any questions please don’t be shy. I love talking about freeform (or just about any other type of crochet). I have all sorts of interesting resources stashed on my computer. Its amazing what can be learned from the asking of a simple question (by both the person asking and the person being asked).
