Freezer Burn
I call this my “Variations on a Theme Series” because I like to give options in my designs. In this one pattern I have given variations in yarn weight (worsted and fingering) as well as multiple coloring versions. One pattern - Various combinations.
The pattern literally flies quickly off your needles, before you know it you’ll have a finished colorwork hat which is very easy to follow with both charted and written directions. Whatever color palette you choose, the gradient background version will be whimsical and fun while the solid background version with the graduated detailing will look sleek and ready to wear.
Gauge
Fingering - 32 st and 36 rows to 4 inches
Worsted - 24 st and 28 rows to 4 inches
In pattern
Yarn
For the fingering version I used a combination of Knit Style Yarns posh sock and Malabrigo Mechita for the firey gradient and an alpaca based wool which was in my stash.
For the worsted version I used Cascade 220 wool.
Yarn Amounts
One 140 yard skein/hank of worsted or 200 yard skein/hank of fingering of each color is plenty. Common sense is good sense. Of course if you choose a version with more of a base color, you’re going to be using more of that color.
Sizing
I design my hats with a beanie structure. The site I generally go to for crown shaping is:
