French Baby Bonnet
Using a “soft hand” thread is a “must” for this bonnet, or the finished item will be much too stiff and the size will be “off.” I originally used “Baumwolle” by Manuella, however this thread is no longer available. DMC “Cebelia” also works, as does Caron “Grandma’s Best.“ Size 20 thread yields a newborn to 3 month size.
Rows 1-6 should produce a beginning “medallion” that measures 2 3/8” in diameter.
Larger thread and/or a larger hook will yield a larger size.
My mother wore a baby cap of this style in one of her baby photos taken in 1927. Since once of her cousins wore the same style cap, it appears it was made by my great-grandmother (the grandmother to both infants) who was French. We found this cap in my mother’s things after her death - I had never seen it before. I have replicated the cap and written down the pattern.
