Fringes and Pearls Sweater
This sweater is beautiful, simple and slightly funky in a good mix. It is knitted with the beautiful seed stitch technique throughout the work, except for the middle, where stockinette stitches creates a harmonious vertical panel. If different colors are chosen for the front and back panels, the sweater will be reversible.
The seed stitch technique is called pearl stitch in Danish, which is why the Sweater is named Fringes and Pearls
The sweater is knit from one sleeve to the other sleeve and there are no seams. Cast on stitches for the left sleeve and knit in the round until the armhole. Then knit back and forth from the frontside over the shoulder and onto the backside. Then split for the neck opening. Knit frontside and backside separately. When the neck opening has the desired size, reassemble and knit the opposite side.
The merled effect is created by knitting with two strands of yarns throughout the project. The fringes are created by changing one of the two strands of yarn on every other round/row, and they are automatically weaved in when you make the change from the old to the new yarn. When choosing yarn from the same color family - here the reds, the fringes play very beautiful together.
The sweater is knitted with a lace weight yarn throughout the work, which is never broken. It creates a consistent and harmonious fabric.
The sweater is designed so the opening for the body/waistline takes place at the same time as you begin knitting the shoulders. In order for this design to fit you, you must have a wider measurement around your shoulders than around your waist (measured across the navel). If you have another measurement the pattern will guide you to alternative sections, where the opening for the body/waistline occurs earlier (referred to in the diagram as the optional circumference).
Samples
The red sample is a size M. Knitted with colors from the red color family.
The turquoise-blue samle is a size L. Knitted with the optional circumference. The sweater becomes more airy like a poncho. The sample is a little too big for the model.
The light blue sample shows how the sweater can be knitted in the same color throughout the project, except for the stockinette panel in the middle. The pattern will make directions for this option.
Sizes: S (M, L)
It has not been possible for me to get it testet in other sizes. I do have the test pattern ready if testers for size XL and XXL offers to help me out. Please write me a private message if you are interessted. Thank you.
Seed stitch in the round:
I have experienced that some knitters can’t knit seed stitch in the round, without making the seed stitches lean to one side. You may want to test this before purchasing the pattern.
Cast on 60 sts, join to knit in the round.
Rnd 1: (k1, p1) to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: (p1, k1) to end of rnd.
Repeat rnd 1-2 until you have a reliable swatch. The swatch can also be used to measure your gage.
Finished Measurements: See illustration.
Yarn: Lace weight and fingering weight held together.
The sweater is knitted by holding 2 strands of yarn together. One strand is a lace weight yarn, which is used throughout the work.
The second strand is a fingering weight yarn. This yarn is used for fringes and replaced on every other round/row.
Lace weight yarn
Handdyed.dk merino 800 (875 yards / 800 m per 100 g), which is a lace weight yarn. You can find other brands, and alternatively you can choose silk/mohair for a more furry look.
Yarn for fringes
Choose wool yarn or sock yarn intended for needle size US 1½-4 / 2½-3½ mm. You can use yarn leftovers from your stash, which are of the same color family.
The red sample has different red colors: pink in different shades except for deep dark pink, neon pink, neon orange, orange, orange red, red except for very dark red, raspberry red.
In the samlple, an orange yarn is used in every 3rd color change to make sure that the orange color became a main theme color.
Alternatively you can knit with the same color throughout the project.
