Frinton Beach
These socks were inspired by a visit to Frinton-on-Sea in Essex in the south of England. There was a lot of seaweed washed up on the beach that day. Some fronds were tangled together, others had been laid out on the sand by the tide. The seaweed rib on the feet and legs of the socks reflects the tangle of seaweed on the beach. The front of the sock legs features a design which resembles the seaweed strands as they dried in the sun.
The socks are worked toe-up, using a Boomerang short-row heel. This heel type uses German short rows. A photo tutorial for this technique is given in the pattern.
The pattern is written for three sizes, worked at a tension of 8.5sts per inch over stocking stitch on 2.25mm (US 1) needles.
Sizes: Small (Medium, Large): 7.5”/19cm, (8.5”/21.5cm, 9.5”/24cm) foot circumference
Both the stitch patterns for the seaweed rib and the design on the front of the sock leg are charted only.
You need to be able to: work an appropriate cast-on for a toe-up sock, work in the round, work from charts, work a short-row-based heel (tutorial provided)
You will need up to 400 yards of fingering weight sock yarn, 2.25mm (US 1) needles for knitting in the round, two stitch markers, and a darning needle. The pattern is written with either Magic Loop or working on two circular needles in mind, but could also be worked using DPNs.
