Frost Flower Super Bulky
NOTE: The gray yarn used in the original version is now discontinued and I have updated the pattern to a new yarn, Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick and the color shown is “Seaglass”. Thick & Quick is available in many lovely colorways including gray.
Frost flowers form outside when the weather is freezing and when the ground has not yet frozen. Water in the stems of certain plants expands and extrudes out of the stem, freezing and forming beautiful crystalline flowers as it oozes out. Most times, frost flowers melt as the sun peeks out, or they hide elusively in shaded areas and appear to be big white flowers. The Frost Flower cowl will keep the chill off your neck on those cold days when you need an extra layer of warmth.
I originally designed this cowl in 2017 for KnitCrate and I recently reacquired the rights to the pattern when they closed up shop and I have fully updated the pattern using a different yarn.
The cowl is crocheted using a super bulky weight yarn in the round repeating the same round after the starting foundation row and the first round. With each round the stitch pattern moves the chain space opening forward producing diagonal rows of open chain spaces.
For this cowl I used about 1.5 skeins (about 115 yards) of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn in the color “Seaglass”. Check all of the great colorways for this yarn. This is truly an economical one-skein wonder project that is fast and fun. And, because it is so quick to crochet and easy to wear it is perfect for gifting!
Skills required:
Foundation single crochet row: fsc row
Standing double crochet: sdc
chain, sc, hdc, dc, slip stitch
The pattern includes alternates to the fsc and sdc if you wish to not do them. The cowl is perfectly doable with the alternate methods.
Frost Flower is suitable for a confident crocheter with good basic crochet skills including joining and crocheting in the round. But, this pattern is not intended to teach a beginner to crochet.
