Marling is the easiest way to create a unique look by simply holding two strands of yarn together. Choose yarns for color or texture; and in this case I’ve decided to do both! For this hat and cowl set you’ll hold a strand of fingering weight yarn with a DK weight for the colorful marled rib edges and then the DK yarn with a strand of Kidsilk Lace for the main fabric, adding a little texture, or “frosting” on top! This is a freshened up version of the previously published Frosting designs, requiring less yarn and simpler instructions!

The hat is designed with a lined brim; usually that involves a fiddly provisional cast on. Instead, just cast on as normal and knit the brim twice as long as needed, then it’s super easy to fold the brim to the inside and whip stitch into place. Still has that same professional, finished look but with no chance of dropping stitches.

Supplies:
Yarn A = Hedgehog Merino Singles DK, 100 gram hank (2 skeins needed for set, 1 each for hat & cowl), or about 300 yards of a similar weight DK yarn to knit both the hat and cowl.

Yarn B = Hedgehog Sock Minis (2 minis needed for the set, 1 each for hat & cowl – or about 150 yards of a similar fingering weight yarn to knit both the hat and cowl.

Yarn C = Hedgehog Kidsilk Lace, one 50 gram hank (this is plenty knit both the hat & cowl) or about 300 yards of a laceweight mohair yarn.

Needles for hat: 16” circular needle in US 6 or size needed for gauge, plus a set of DPNs in the same size for decreasing the top of hat.
Needles for cowl: 24” circular needle in US 6 or size needed for gauge.
Gauge should be 18 sts over 4 inches after blocking in stockinette, holding one strand of A and C together.
