Notes From the Designer:

Frühling is German for “spring,” and I chose the name because “spring” is this shawl’s primary characteristic. The colors actually remind me of the colors of a typical, early fall day in Indiana where I live – the white puffy clouds, the blue sky, the fading green of the trees, and the deep yellow of drying crops in the fields. However, it is actually the texture of the Lattice Lace that inspired this shawl’s name. I love the way this stitch pattern seems fairly ordinary while it’s being worked, but it magically “springs” open to a surprising degree when it’s blocked. In addition to the magical Lattice Lace, Frühling incorporates two Shetland Lace inspired motifs – one down the center spine and the other across the bottom edge. The interchangeable Lattice Lace and Solid Rows allow you to modify the shawl to be as lacy or as solid as you like.

  • Click here to view a tutorial on how to cast on with the German Twisted Cast On, how to work the Lattice Lace rows, and how to bind off.

  • Frühling is a simple pattern with easy-to-memorize sections.

  • The sample shown used approximately 529 yards (484 m) total: Color A: 32 yards (29 m), Color B: 45 yards (41 m), Color C: 92 yards (84 m), Color D: 116 yards (106 m), and Color E: 244 yards (223 m).

  • Begin with a stretchy cast on, such as the German Twisted Cast On, and be careful to keep the two edge stitches on either side loose throughout the project.

  • The first stitch of each row is slipped knitwise. Keep this stitch loose.

  • The Lattice Lace and Solid Rows sections have identical center sections, and any row of one can be substituted for the same row of the other, allowing you to customize how lacy or solid you prefer your shawl to be. However, you must complete a total of 128 rows (sixteen 8-row sets) after completing the Setup Rows in order for the stitch counts to be correct to work the transition and edging rows.

  • Color transition instructions are based on the sample, but you can change colors more frequently or work the entire shawl in one color.

  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
