Fruity Potholders and Coasters
These are a super fun and easy project that look great in any kitchen. They can be made with two or three colours each that either represent more accurate fruit colours (like the “grapefruit” pictured) or any other colour combo chosen because you like them (like the “blue” and “lavender” fruit). Two colours are needed to create the inner fruit pattern, one darker for the fruit’s main colour, and a lighter (recommend either white/off-white) colour to divide the fruit segments. A third optional colour can be added for the edge round (the “rind”) or the main colour can be used again for this round. The Grapefruit and Blue Fruit use three colours and the Lavender Fruit uses just two colours. The patterns for both the potholders and coasters begin the same but the coaster is smaller and cast off sooner while the potholder continues for more rounds before adding the rind.

Any worsted weight cotton yarn will work to make similar sized coasters and potholders, and any weight of yarn will work to make these as long as a smaller hook than is recommended for that particular yarn is used (to create the tight stitching)
Hook
3.5 mm hook with worsted weight cotton yarn
A smaller hook than is recommended for the yarn is used to create a tight stitch with minimal gaps. The recommended size hook for the yarn used is 5mm and a 3.5 mm hook is used. The recommended hook size could still be used to make these coasters, but it will not be as tight and it will lose a bit of its fruit-like look.
