YARN, GAUGE AND MACHINE:  ANY gauge and type of Japanese style knitting machine  can make this design in the Mary Maxim Big Ball soft  100% acrylic yarn# but it is perfect for the mid-gauge.  The yarn is classified as #4 but it is a very light representative of its category. On the bulky, it gets the  gauge of 5 stitches/7 rows per inch at stitch size 3.1.  Mid-gauge machines, depending on model use stitch size  5-8. I was even able to match the gauge on a Brother  standard gauge at stitch size 10 using every other needle.  It knitted easily. The Artisan mid-gauge is the only mid-gauge machine that can knit size 58 as it has more needles  than most. Most mid-gauge machines can knit most of the  sizes. The design  does not require a ribber. It does make use of a punchcard  for the fairisle trim but the needles may be hand selected  on more basic machines.
10 sizes with finished but/hip 36.7-58”. Sizes require 9298, 102, 108,  112, 116,  122, 128, 138, 148 needles. Therefore bulky and standard gauge machines can only make the smaller sizes. 1360-2250 yards required. To substitute yarn choose a very light #4  yarn such as Caron Simply Soft or Tamm Nordic.
