Fustat Reco Socks to moja próba odwzorowania egipskiego znaleziska z XII wieku. Oryginalne skarpetki wykonano nićmi bawełnianymi w kolorze naturalnym oraz zabarwionych indygo; dziergano od palców w górę, na końcu zaś zrobiono piętę (zapewne tak samo jak palce) i wszyto w pozostawiony wcześniej otwór. Sposób ten umożliwiał łatwą wymianę najbardziej narażonego na zniszczenie miejsca.
Tworząc poniższy wzór, zdecydowałam się na kilka zmian, które mam nadzieję, ułatwią pracę nad tym sporym projektem. Między innymi proponuję włókna wełniane, które są bardziej elastyczne, ale też używam nieco grubszej włóczki. W związku z tym ostatnim nastąpiła pewna redukcja ilości żakardu. Niemniej jednak schemat wzoru odwzorowałam dokładnie, zatem moja praca jest odtwórstwem na miarę obecnych - bardziej fast-fashion - czasów.

Skarpety robione są od góry, zaczynając od ściegu francuskiego, który zastępuje tu ściągacz. Po kilku rzędach dżersejem, przechodzimy do pierwszego, najdłuższego panelu żakardowego. Na długości łydki, na kolorze bazowym odejmujemy oczka i tuż nad kostką wykonuje się drugi, węższy panel wzoru. Następnie pozostawiając otwór na wrobienie pięty, ponownie zmniejszamy obwód, aby przejść do trzeciego panelu żakardu. W zależności od długości stopy, w odpowiednim miejscu zamykamy oczka na palce i zszywamy je igłą. Na końcu zbieramy oczka w pozostawionej na piętę dziurze i wrabiamy ją z niewielkim elementem żakardu (jak w oryginalnym znalezisku), zamykając podobnym sposobem jak palce.

Fustat Reco Socks is my attempt to reproduce an Egyptian find from the 12th century. The original socks were made of natural and indigo-colored cotton threads; it was knitted from the toes up, and at the end a heel was made (probably the same as the toes) and sewn into the hole left earlier. This method enabled easy replacement of the place most exposed to damage.
When creating the pattern below, I decided to make a few changes that I hope will make working on this large project easier. Among other things, I suggest wool fibers, which are more flexible, but I also use slightly thicker yarn. Due to the latter, there has been some reduction in the amount of jacquard. Nevertheless, I reproduced the pattern diagram exactly, so my work is a recreation tailored to the current - more fast-fashion - times.

The socks are made from the top, starting with the French stitch, which replaces the cuff. After a few rows of stockinette stitch, we move on to the first, longest jacquard panel. At the length of the calf, in the base color, we subtract stitches and a second, narrower panel of the pattern is made just above the ankle. Then, leaving an opening for the heel, we reduce the circumference again to move to the third panel of the jacquard. Depending on the length of the foot, we close the toe stitches in the appropriate place and sew them with a needle. Finally, we collect the stitches in the hole left for the heel and sew it in with a small jacquard element (as in the original find), closing it in a similar way to the toes.
