Gabro Rose is a sweater knitted with a chunky-bulky weight yarn, showing some rough texture, but without the heaviness that sometimes coincides knitting with thicker yarn. Sleeves in knit stockinette stand oud against the purled stockinette of front and back. It offers a nice grid for a delicate rose, embroidered in duplicate stitch, as an honour to flowers growing on barren grounds…
This sweater is a pretty quick knit, obviously, since it is knit with bulky weight yarn. It is seamless, with a saddle-shoulder and knit top-down.
Pattern allows for all kinds of variations. The body has a fitted waistline, with some negative ease in the chest and hip region, but the pattern easily allows for omission. Sleeves can be optional elbow, three quarter, or full length, depending on your preference.

SIZES:
This pattern includes 4 sizes (S,M,L,XL) corresponding with chest sizes (34-37-40-45” or 84-94-102-113 cm). Sizing table with finished garment measurements is included in the pattern.

MATERIALS:
Yarn & Yardage:
500 (550, 600, 650) gr bulky weight (category 5) tweed yarn (model shows discontinued Adriafil Scozia yarn, colour 39 Anthracite) (50% wool, 40% manufactured fibers: 62m / 68 yds = 50 gr), or alternative: 550 (600, 650, 700) yds / 500 (550, 600, 650) m of any other desired bulky weight yarn, or alternative: 1100 (1200, 1300, 1400) yds / 1000 (1100, 1200, 1300) m of medium weight yarn held double.
These amounts apply to full length sleeves.

For the embroidered rose some aran weight waste yarn in the colours red, pink and green (yarn used in model Katia Merino Aran; colours 52, 51 and 48).

Needles and other:

  • For body: 1 circular needle 8.0 mm (US size 11) 32”/80 cm or 4 DPNs 8.0 mm (or in size needed to obtain gauge)
  • For hems: 1 circular needle 6.0 mm (US size 10) 16”/40 cm or 4 DPNs 6.0 mm (US size 10). In bulky yarn a smaller needle size may be needed to make the V’s in the 2x2 rib match in size with the V’s in stockinette stitch. Advice is to experiment here.
  • 5 stitch markers
  • measuring tape, tapestry needle, some waste yarn

GAUGE:
11st x 16rows: 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch

TECHNIQUES:
Next to the usual knitting, purling, increasing and decreasing the following techniques are used:
Short rows (to lower the front neckline)
One piece construction (transferring stitches on scrap yarn and picking up stitches)
Duplicate stitch

Pattern is suited for an advanced beginner.
