Gairloch Pattern Headband
This double layered headband is a modern take on a traditional stranded colourwork pattern from the North West Highlands of Scotland.
The Gairloch Pattern was used for stockings in the main but was also widely applied to waistcoats and other garments. The Gairloch Pattern is knitted in stranded colourwork technique with two contrasting colours. The pattern repeats in both horizontal and vertical directions, but can also be worked to stand alone as a single diamond.
The headband is knitted in the round with two colours in the patterned exterior and a single colour lining. Edges are decorated with i-cord.
The pattern was developed by staff at Gairloch Museum as part of the Highland Threads exhibition in April 2021. It is based on knitted objects in the museum’s collection, and notes on the old patterns held in the museum’s archive. All proceeds from the sale of the pattern go to support Gairloch Museum.
