I named this shawl after one of the mountains that surround my current home.

This Aran-style triangle shawl with traveling Celtic cables is worked bottom-up. The instructions are for 2 sizes:

  • Medium: approximately 200 cm (79 inches) wingspan and 65 cm (26 inches) height.
  • Large: approximately 300 cm (118 inches) wingspan and 97 cm (38 inches) height.

The language is English. All instructions are given in centimeters and inches. All my patterns are using Calibri font size 13 in black on white, so they are accessible and easy to read on different screens and when printed. All abbreviations and acronyms are explained in the pattern.

All instructions are written and I have included a chart of the cable panel for your convenience (you can use the written instructions without the chart; this is just here in case you prefer charts).

Skills required: knit, purl, basic cables.

Recommended yarn
Any DK weight yarn. Aim for yarn with 10-11 wraps per inch (WPI), around 200 metres per 100 grams (220 yards / 3.6 oz). The shawl in this photo is made with DROPS Karisma, color Lavender (#74) and I used about 760 metres (830 yards) for a Medium-sized shawl. For a Large-sized shawl, plan using on about 1,200 metres (1,312 yards)

Gauge: 17 stitches per 10 cm (= 4.3 per inch)

Needles

  • Knitting needles of 4mm / 8 UK / 6 US or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Circular needles that are 120-150 cm long (47 to 59 in) are recommended because you will have over 300 stitches on the needles towards the end.
  • Crochet needle (optional, for making a smooth edge). Size 3 mm (US C/2 or D/3, UK 11) or 4 (US G/6, UK 8)
  • Cable needle one size smaller than the knitting needles.
