Pattern is HERE

Scully went a long way for revolutionizing the portrayal of women scientists on TV. These were the days long before Rizzoli and Isles, and at the time it was very rare to see a woman, let alone a woman doctor, in a position of occupational power equal to or above her male counterparts.

Dana Scully doesn’t believe in Aliens or glass ceilings.

Brought into the FBI’s X-Files to discredit the work of agent Fox Mulder, Scully was a butt-kicking, power suit wearing, ginger phenomenon. I’ve seen every episode (though to be fair, it’s been awhile. We should Netflix binge on it together!) and Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of her had a definite influence on my young self. I don’t have many “IRL role models.” I live in my fantasy world and the weather here is great. My point is, I’m very grateful to have grow up in a time where I could idolize Dana Scully, MD. You won’t hear me say this often: thanks, Fox Network.

I went in an unconventional direction on this square and I’ve had a few people ask why. So here’s the thing: This square isn’t about the X-Files, and it’s about Mulder even less. I didn’t want to diminish my homage to Scully as a scientist by doing a square that made people think of Mulder. So I didn’t do the X-files logo or the I-Want-To-Believe Poster. I feel good about that choice. I downright agonized over how to put Scully on a square, she doesn’t have an identifying tattoo or any inherent symbolism I could put on a square and say, “Yep, that’s her.“ Despite that, she deserves to be on the blanket. While I stand by doing a cartoonish version of Scully ignoring the aliens, this is not one of the squares I can claim “turned out just how I imagined it.” If it’s anything, the square for two weeks from now turned out WAY better than I imagined it. That’s the process I suppose. Long story short, I still think it’s pretty cool, even if it isn’t gonna win any awards.
