GALWAY BAY SHAWL is a symmetrical shawl knitted top down. Starting with a garter tab cast on, it proceeds with even increases along the sides and three center lines.
The shawl design was inspired by the yarn it is knitted with – Galway yarn naturally dyed by Woolly Mammoth Fiber Co. This yarn is made from wool of Galway sheep - Ireland’s native sheep breed, which was on the endangered list in the 1980’s. The Galway Wool Co-op was started to protect and promote the breed, and this yarn was made in collaboration with the Co-op.
The shawl features Sections of very simple lace that reminds fisherman’s nets, stockinette, and a bit of colourwork. All these sections can be rearranged and worked in different order to achieve your own unique looking shawl. This design also uses very simple intarsia and it can be a great introduction to this technique.
