I love using highly variegated colorways in unexpected places. This modified herringbone scarf alternates between a variegated colorway & a semi-solid colorway every row leaving your stitchwork as interesting as your color.
This pattern is currently part of the It’s a Kit! sets from Nerd Girl Yarns. Shown here is the Riverdale set in Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe & Twilight Drive-In colorways.
Construction Notes: First - you may be wondering why you are using such a large needle for a worsted weight yarn - the herringbone stitch needs it. In fact, you’ll want to make sure each stitch is pretty loosey goosey as you knit otherwise size up another needle size. I am a loose gauge knitter so if you are the opposite, you might want to consider larger needles before you even swatch. The herringbone stitch pattern makes for a dense fabric and if you are finding you are struggling to get your needles through the stitches then it’s too tight. If you are getting gauge, you’re good to go.
Due to the nature of the striping, you absolutely cannot use straights with this pattern - you must use a needle that you can work from either end. After you setup your first couple of rows you will begin knitting two rows then purling two rows - you won’t turn until every two, instead you’ll go back, use the other color, and do the same thing again. It’s the only way to alternate every row in a new color while knitting flat.
