As the weather cools down in Autumn, or is yet to warm up in Spring, a pair of fingerless mitts is ideal for keeping your hands warm and toasty whilst leaving your fingers free!

This pattern is the result of another coffee-fuelled conversation between me and Helen, the owner of Woolly Chic (http://www.woollychicdesigns.co.uk/), leading to this fingerless mitt pattern being released at Yarndale in September 2017.

These mitts were designed with Woolly Chic’s beautiful range of DK yarns in mind. Once again, I wanted to take full advantage of the crispness and great stitch definition of these yarns. Therefore I used a textured pattern inspired by the stitch patterns used on Gansey sweaters, incorporating just knit and purl stitches.

These fingerless mitts are worked seamlessly in the round. An afterthought thumb is added at the end.

Techniques Used:

I used the Magic Loop technique on one long circular needle, but you could use two circular needles or double pointed needles, whatever is your preference for knitting in the round. If you can knit and purl in the round, then you should be able to tackle this project with ease.

The pattern uses a cable cast on, a stretchy cast off, and an afterthought thumb. Full instructions for these techniques are provided. The pattern includes charts as well as full written instructions.

Yarn:

Any Woolly Chic DK yarn can be used. Samples have been worked in Woolly Chic Alpaca and Welsh DK Wool, Wensleydale/Pembrokeshire DK Wool, DK Pembrokeshire Wool and Natural Welsh Wool (undyed)
2 x 25g balls are sufficient for a pair of large size mitts.

Additional Materials:

  • 3.75mm (US 5) needles for knitting in the round or size needed to get gauge
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Waste yarn to hold the stitches for the afterthought thumb
  • Stitch markers

Sizes:

Small (Large)
To fit a palm circumference, measured at the widest point, of 7 (8.5) inches / 18 (21.5) cm.

A huge thank you to my test knitters, Helen, Jane and Fiona, for checking the pattern and providing valuable feedback!

I hope you enjoy knitting and wearing these fingerless mitts!
