Recipe includes knitting guidelines

Use Sport or DK weight fiber, 14 wpi; Recipe calls for 16-ply cotton twine; polytwine will also work. Hook size as small as 4mm up to 5mm will work well with the 16-ply cotton. A hook size as small as 3.25mm may be required for “kitchen cotton” type yarns such as Sugar ‘n Cream or Dishie, etc.

I had two uniquely-shaped garden baskets for which I could not find suitable coco-fiber liners… of which I’ve grown weary anyway. Finding a 3,000 foot cone of cotton twine @ Amazon under $20, I decided to unvent my own liners.

I chose to crochet mine, but you can knit yours if you prefer… this recipe will guide you either way. More important than the fiber or size tool you use is that your fabric is tight to keep wet soil from escaping over time. You are the master of your liner.

Do consider that your liner will be exposed to the elements when choosing your fiber.

Remember: these are “Recipes,” which means, you’ll need to adapt and modify depending on the specific basket you are lining as well as factoring in the fiber & tool size you’ve chosen. You may have to start and restart a couple of times to get the best combination of fiber/tool, number of stitches, fabric tightness, and where to place your increases.

It will be best to have your empty basket by your side & to “try on” your liner frequently to decide how many, how frequently, and where to place increases as you mold your liner to fit your basket. It doesn’t have to be “perfect.” Once it is full of soil and your plants take center stage, the liner will be purely functional.
