Gardener's Gauntlets
“Captain Faramir, you have shown your quality, sir - the very highest.”
“The Shire must truly be a great realm, Master Gamgee, where gardeners are held in high honor.”
-- The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers movie version
Work in a garden is never done, even in winter. These densely knitted flip top mittens will keep your gardener’s fingers warm in the worst weather, while at the same time allowing them to easily flip off the tops to increase dexterity when needed. The interesting gusset detail runs smoothly from the bottom of the cuff to the tip of the thumb. These mittens are a warm and practical accessory for any outdoorsman.
Materials Needed:
- convertible version @190 (230; 290) yards aran weight yarn
- fingerless version @137 (170; 220) yards aran weight yarn
- 4mm (US 6) circular or dpn needles or size needed to make gauge
- scrap yarn in a contrasting colour
- stitch marker to mark gusset stitches
- darning needle or other large eyed needle to sew finger cap to back of mitten
- additional marker to mark start of rounds (optional)
Finished Sizes:
Medium – fits 7” palm; Large – fits 8” palm; Extra Large – fits 9” palm
Gauge: 20 sts x 42 rows in garter slipped stitch motif
A note on gauge: because the row gauge is compressed by the slipped stitches, row gauge must be measured only after the paired rows of slipped stitches are completed to ensure gauge accuracy.
The pattern includes a photo tutorial showing how to mark the position of the finger cap (using scrap yarn) and sew it to the back of the mitten.
Optionally, the finger cap may be omitted and the thumbs bound off for fingerless mittens. Instructions for binding off the thumbs are included in the pattern.
