Garland
About This Design
The turning of the seasons into vibrant Spring colours, plus a burning desire to use some of the long-colour gradient yarns in my stash were the inspiration for Garland. Springtime in South Eastern Australia is a-glow with colour, from vibrant yellows and greens to delicate pinks and purples; wherever you look at this time of the year, you will be rewarded with a colour feast for your eyes.
Many of my crochet designs use lots of colours, mostly to use leftover bits and bobs from other projects (check out my Lolly Jar Project Design Challenge to see what I mean). However, Garland is different, as it has been designed to let the long-colour gradient yarn do the heavy lifting for your colour palette without you needing lots of leftovers in your stash. Some clever re-winding of your balls of yarn will give you access to a wider range of colours within each ball, making it super easy for you to build a vibrant and varied colour scheme for your own Garland.
This design uses join-as-you-go motifs, so your Garland will grow very quickly, and you can watch your colour scheme evolve as you go.
Gauge
A completed and blocked single motif should measure 2.56 ins/6.5 cm in diameter using a 3.0 mm (UK size 11) crochet hook. A reasonable match for the gauge is important for this pattern to ensure you get a lovely drapey fabric at the correct finished dimensions. Please move up or down a hook size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match.
Yarn
You will need 3 x 100g balls of 4 ply/fingering weight yarn (approx. 437 yards/400 metres per 100g) in three different long colour gradient colourways that crochet to match the required gauge.
The sample Garlands have been crocheted with Countrywide Yarns, 4-ply/fingering weight Mandala (superfine 100% pure wool) in shades MD414 (shades of pink), MD406 (shades of purple), and MD403 (shades of blue) and Bendigo Multi-Coloured 4 ply/fingering weight sock yarn (70% wool and 30% nylon) in shades 280 (rose gold), 283 (oriental flowers) and 523 (red orange multi). Sadly, this final colour is currently unavailable.
