Garter and Eyelets Shawl
I am always drawn to beautiful, variegated, fingering weight skeins of yarn. I can’t help myself! I see it and think: “I have to get this. What if I never see it again?” I LOVE to knit socks, but sometimes, I want to knit something else. And sometimes, I feel like I should use my stash. Sometimes my stash doesn’t have anything that matches my crazy fingering weight yarns that I just had to have. This is why one skein projects are so great! I’ve knit a few patterns by others before. I love that I can usually get a project done in a week or so.
This time I decided to make something up to use in an introductory class at the yarn shop I work at. This pattern uses very simple knitting techniques that are just beyond the beginner knit and purl stitches. It’s a great next step for someone that just made it past their first knitting project. It’s worked on big needles, and the pattern is very forgiving if you are still working on your tension. Otherwise, it’s a fun, quick knit for the experienced knitter!
Also, no blocking equipment is needed. I have a blocking suggestion at the end of the pattern. My photos are of my project using this blocking method.
This pattern has been test knitted. A special thank you to Chris, Edith, and Heather for that!
note: there has been some concern about how loose the gauge is using such large needles with thin yarn. I have added a new project with pictures of what the fabric looks like before blocking. It is quite loose. After blocking, the yarn I used plumps a bit with blocking, the yarn overs open up, and the rest of the stitches even out. If your yarn is on the thinner side or you are a loose knitter, you may want to consider going down a needle size. Hopefully my updates will be helpful. Please don’t hesitate to message with your questions. Thank you all for your support!
