This pattern is designed to carry the yarn throughout the blanket, so you won’t be weaving in lots of ends.

Since I first posted this pattern I’ve had some insights that make it easier to knit. I’ve written improved instructions about how to do the stranded knitting and slip stitch rows. Since I’m a continental knitter, that’s how I wrote the instructions, but in addition to making some improvements for that, I also tried to make it simpler for english knitters (you’re the ones who wrap the yarn around the needle) . I also realized that adding a garter stitch border to the blanket would make the edges smoother because the yarn wouldn’t be carried on the edge of the blanket.

I haven’t rewritten the instructions here yet, but you might want to refer to my Garter Slip Stitch Scarf and Hat pattern. The main difference between the scarf and the blanket is that the blanket should have a 6 or 8 stitch border instead of 4 stitches and there are less stitches in each row. You’ll also want to start and end the blanket with enough rows of garter stitch to match the width of your left and right borders.

The scarf pattern doesn’t include instructions about the eyelet rows (Rows 3-6, 29-32 in blanket pattern). For carrying the yarn in these rows, do a similar thing there to what you do in the stranded knitting and slip stitch rows. The eyelet section should extend only as far as the border.

There’s one other detail because of adding the border. You’ll need to measure out enough yarn for the left border and set it aside before you cast on. This should be about number of border stitches (8) * total number of rows (58) / 36 yards long or about 13 yards (or 14 if you’re superstituous). If you want a longer blanket, you’ll need to increase the number of rows. Don’t worry if you run out, you can always add a little more to finish off the blanket later. This is only necessary for the left border.
