Garter snakes are an amazingly varied and colorful family - this amigurumi version is modeled on the San Francisco garter snake, possibly the most stunning of them all with its stripes of red, black and blue-green.

The pattern has instructions for both a basic, straight snake (freely posable so great for toys, mostly mindless crochet, easy to make longer or shorter) and a realistically coiled one (perfectly posed without wiring, requires attention to crochet which also means it doesn’t get boring).

Size
The straightened snake is about 45 cm (18”) long, coiled it is about 17 cm (6 3/4 ”) long and 12 cm (4 ¾”) wide, if made with DK yarn.

Tools and materials
~ yarn in red, light blue and black (of course, you could use different colors for different garter snake varieties!)
~ crochet hook: 2.75mm/US size C if using DK yarn (or size that gives you a tight, no-gaps fabric)
~ black plastic safety eyes: 7.5mm for DK yarn (9mm for worsted, 6mm for sport weight)
~ fiberfill stuffing
~ stitch markers, pair of scissors, pair of tweezers, yarn needle
~ optionally, a wire cutter to shorten the eye stems

Difficulty
This pattern is suitable for intermediate level crocheters who are confident with basic stitches (ch, sl st, sc) and frequently used amigurumi techniques (invisible decrease, color change).

The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology (UK/Aus equivalents provided). It contains many in-progress photos, but also includes a text-only appendix for easy printing, if you prefer working from a printed pattern but want to save ink and paper.

Finished amigurumi made from this pattern are yours to keep or gift or sell, I only ask you to credit me as the designer in case you decide to sell them.
