GarterHandWarmers
Simple, one-skein hand warmers in forgiving garter stitch with I-cord edges. Very warm. Good for keeping knitting injuries warm, which helps healing. Easily altered to suit particular shape or size. Firm I-cord at wrist is snug getting over hand but helps keep hand warmer in place during wear. Fingers free to work or type. Knitted from side to side. Includes I-cord selvedges, attached I-cord edging, and grafting. Quick project.
Gauge: 15 st and 15 garter ridges to 4-inch square.
Materials: less than one skein of worsted yarn (50g/100m)
Note on sizing: Although I have presented it in one size, this pattern easily lends itself to changes in sizing. See schematic (page 4). To make shorter in length, so as to not reach so far up on the fingers, reduce the number of stitches above the thumb opening (right-hand side of schematic), by 2 or 3 sts. To make smaller around, reduce the number of garter ridges in first section, before dividing for thumb opening (lower part of schematic), by 1 to 3 ridges. For a larger size, add garter ridges in first section. Hand warmer should stretch to hug hand—garter knitting is quite stretchy. Alternately, a smaller gauge can be used to produce a smaller item. Check fit just before grafting—remembering that the fit should be snug.
Note on grafting: A row of garter grafting is used to join CO row with last row. To skip this, cast on with long-tail method, cast off instead of knitting last row, and sew hand warmer together.
