Gateway Arch - National Park Blanket Square
The year 2016 was the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Smart Knits - a knitting group out of Logan, Utah - thought that a great way to celebrate the National Park Service and the sublime lands that it protects was to design a National Parks blanket. Since 2016, four new parks have been established. We have designed squares for these new parks.
The Gateway Arch was completed in 1965, but the surrounding area had already been designated as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial 30 years earlier. In 2018, the arch and surrounding region were redesignated as the “Gateway Arch National Park” and became the smallest U.S. National Park. The Gateway Arch itself, adjacent to the Mississippi River, is built of steel and has become the icon of St. Louis. This park and river setting is represented in this square, with the steel-constructed arch and tree line reflected in the water of the Mississippi.
