This wrap was inspired by watching storms roll in over the Great Lakes as a child; I remember seeing fluffy white storm clouds on the horizon, a great distance away. They would slowly meander over the endless expanse of water. Rain would play and splash on top of the water before reaching us at the shore. The sky would turn a dark steel-grey, and the water would grow choppy and terribly, wondrously navy blue. Living in the Midwest now, I no longer see storms roll in over the water, but I remember their awe-inspiring power and vicious beauty! The stark divisions between the colors of this shawl, and their skewness, are meant to represent the darkening of the sky, the heightening wind, and the churning lake as the storm arrives.

The Gathering Storm Wrap is a heavily-biased, asymmetrical rectangle wrap with simple feather-and-fan lace sections, knit in two contrasting colors. This pattern is perfect for beginners (or anyone who enjoys “knitflixing” with hundreds of biased stockinette rows) :)

Gauge is not important unless you have a limited supply of yarn. I used most of one skein and more than half of another one for this project.

YARN
Two contrasting fingering-weight yarns (MC: 85g/375 yards, CC: 70g/305 yards).
I used Rebel Purl’s ‘4 Plies of the Apocalypse’ fingering-weight yarn in “Goblin King” and “Do I Look Civilized” (4-ply, 100g/436 yards per skein).

NEEDLES
US size 4 (3.5mm) circular needles on 22”/55cm cable.

NOTIONS
A tapestry needle to weave in ends.

TECHNIQUES
Stockinette stitch, increasing, decreasing, feather-and-fan lace, biased rows, striped colorwork

FINISHED DIMENSIONS
105” (267cm) wide by 10.5” (26.7cm) tall after blocking.
