Celebrate COWL SEASON!

The Gaviota Cowl is designed to keep necks warm and toasty. Knit from only one skein of DK yarn (230 yards), this cowl uses a set of stitches, repeated over and over to create different blocks of texture. A chance to explore “sequence” knitting, as explained fabulously by Cecelia Campochiaro in her book SEQUENCE KNITTING.

The pattern presents three different blocks of texture to learn and understand the concept behind creating differing fabrics using a simple repeat of stitches.

MATERIALS: I used Oink Pigments “Mystic” with a generous 230 yards. All of the yardage was used, making no need to stash bust another day! Any DK weight will work. Actually, any weight yarn will work, however gauge may differ significantly, so be sure to have extra on hand if you substitute fibers. OR…double your yardage, double the repeats, and make a long cowl to wrap twice or hang dramatically. Pick something warm and very soft as this stays close to your neck for warmth. Cashmere? Alpaca? Qiviut? Splurge!

GAUGE: Knit loosely on a 5 needle to get 24 stitches per 4”. Check your gauge and go up a needle if needed. Use either straight or circular needles.
