Gealán is a cosy, colorful beanie to keep your head warm this winter.
Gealán meaning Aurora in Gaeilge, is pronounced gee (as in geese)/ Al/ awn. The ideas behind this hat were inspired by the beautiful colors of The Northern Lights flickering and swirling over the frozen tundra.
This hat is worked in the round, from the bottom up, starting with a contrasting color cast on and two color corrugated rib pattern for the brim. The pattern will often carry three or even four strands of different colour yarn in each round. I find it easier to carry two strands in each hand, always keeping the main pattern color in my left hand and rarely wrapping my floats unless the stitches are more than 10/ 12 stitches apart as I feel this can constrict the fabric and pull the pattern in. Knitting with yarn in this many colours at the onetime can condense and make your work heavy. By using a needle size larger than associated or recommended with your chosen yarn weight, can result in a more lightweight fabric. Using a 100% wool yarn will give your color work some stickiness so you don’t need to worry about holes or gaps. I prefer to carry the yarns up through the rounds and only cut them if there is a large distance of rows between each time the colour is used.

Yarn Characteristics:
The sample shown uses a worsted-weight Aran Tweed, a single ply knitting yarn available in a range of vibrant colors and coloured flecks spun into the yarn in the traditional woolen style in Co. Donegal. The yarn is light, but warm. As it is knit on larger needles than recommended the fabric is not stiff even when stranded.
