Inspiration:
I am always inspired by yarn, the colours the texture speaks to me instantly. I love Malabrigo Rios, it’s a work horse for just about anything knitted. The vast array of colours make it impossible to choose… good luck, it won’t be easy.
In addition to playing with textures, I love knitting stranded. This opens endless possibilities. For this knit, I played with twisting stitches and crossing them over, but adding atypical reverse stockinette stitch as the background in a different colour. The effect is quite fun, unexpected and unique.
The hat is knitted bottom up, with quick steep crown decreases to give it a globe shape. I like this shape for pompom addition, it makes the pompom sit firmly on top of the head.
Meant to be worn with slight ease at brim, fitted and not slouchy.
Size: S, M, L
S: circumference 18.5” (47 cm); Height 7” (20 cm).
M: 21” (54cm); 9” (25cm).
L: 24” (61cm); 11” (28cm).
Gauge: 24 st/ 26 rows in charted pattern (rows 11-26), blocked, knitted in the round, in a 4”/10 cm square. Worked on size 7 US (4.5 mm) needles.
Yarn: Malabrigo Rios is a 4-ply yarn, super wash merino, Medium (Worsted), 3.5 oz. / 100g, 209 yards / 192 m.
Amounts needed: Half a skein of each colour. Approx. 90m, 100 yards of each colour.
1 skein of each colour was enough to knit S and M hats.
I used: Size S: CC Glitter, MC Whales Roe. Size M: CC Whales Roe, MC Glitter.
