Gentleman's Bicycle Stocking in Ridged Knitting
by Weldons
The original specifies “7 ounces of good quality Scotch fingering, German fingering, or Alloa Yarn. Four steel knitting needles No. 16, or for a large sized stocking No. 15.” These needle sizes translate to approximately US sizes 000 and 00 (1.75 and 1.5mm) respectively. No stitch gauge is given.
These stockings have a short-row heel, called at the time a “Niantic” heel because it was copied after the machine knitted “Niantic” hosiery.
Weldon’s Practical Stocking Knitter has been reprinted as part of Weldon’s Practical Needlework, Vol. 1
