Gerbe is an historic 16th century term for a bundle or sheaf of wheat. The word derives from French, and in heraldry (as “garb”) is depicted as a yellow or gold stylized sheaf of wheat. The motif on this cowl has the look of stalks of wheat of varied height, and the cylindrical shape of the cowl makes it look like a large sheaf, hence the name.
