German Poppy Pillow
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
- John McCrae
I found this pattern in a very old publication and was enchanted with the “German” stitch. It reminded me of the flowers I saw there last summer. During this trip, I also came across WWI grave remembrance stones in the small rural cemeteries which had our family’s surnames listed on them, although our German ancestors had already immigrated to the States generations before the war. The “German” stitch, the flowers, and the grave remembrance stones germinated in my brain producing this design.
I hope it brightens your home and reminds you of loved ones!
German translation follows English in same pattern.
