Three sizes are available: pre-teens & teens, women and men. If you wish to make a child’s hat using this pattern I recommend to try a lower weight yarn and knit a swatch. Because of the width of the cables, knitting a child’s hat with this gauge is not possible (it would make the hat too tall).

This hat is knit flat, with the cable running horizontally, using short rows to shape the crown. The number of stitches and rows for each size is calculated to fit the head circumference. There is negative ease built into the pattern (meaning that the size is a little tighter than the head circumference), so the hat will be snug on the head.

You can cast on and bind off regularly, seaming the two ends together (mattress seam is best in this case, with the seam somewhat visible but not too obvious). Or you can do a provisional cast on, followed by grafting the two ends (kitchener stitch, which makes the seam almost invisible). I do include some tips in the pattern for both cases, but please note that this is not a tutorial for provisional cast on and grafting. You need to be familiar with these techniques, or else choose the simple way.

Written instructions in English, using US, UK and metric measurements and needle sizes. All my patterns are using Calibri font size 13 in black on white, so they are accessible and easy to read on different screens and when printed. All abbreviations and acronyms are explained in the pattern.

Charts are included for each of the three sizes. Each size has its own set of instructions, on different pages.

Skills required: knit, purl, short rows, cables; provisional cast-on and grafting if you choose this method.

Recommended yarn: Aran weight wool or acrylic yarn that is slightly elastic.

Gauge: 17 stitches and 21 rows = 10 cm in stockinette stitch, after blocking.

Gauge is important in this project (both the stitch and the row gauge) so I strongly recommend knitting a swatch and blocking it before measuring. Switch to larger or smaller needles if necessary to adjust the gauge.

Needles

  • Knitting needles of 6mm needles (US 10 / UK 4) or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Cable needle one size smaller than the knitting needles.
  • Tapestry needle to sew the edges together and weave in the ends.

Yardage:
Pre-teens & teens: 110-120 metres (120-130 yards)
Women: 125-140 metres (135-150 yards)
Men: 140-155 metres (155-170 yards)

Enjoy making this stylish and cozy hat!
