Re-introducing the classy GIADA cardigan (v.02)!
This pattern came out back in late 2021, and it is actually my very first cardigan design so it always has a very special place in my heart.
As all of my newer patterns already equipped with automatic stitches calculator, Giada should not fall behind too!

Obviously, the newly updated Giada cardigan (v.02) pattern equipped with automatic stitches calculator and to make it more convenient for lazy crocheter (like me),
I changed the construction method into top-down construction too This means you will have less end tails to weave, very minimal sewing involved (you only need 2!), you can try the cardi as you crochet, and you can easily add the length whenever you need.

The textured stitches might look intimidating at first, but don’t worry, this cardigan is actually made from combinations of basic stitches and repetition.
Although that it might seem intimidating at first, I believe with the help of the video tutorial for the stitches and step-by-step pictures included in this pattern, you will be able to crochet this cardigan easily.

About this pattern:
• Pattern is written in English with standard US terms.
• The hyperlinks in this file won’t work if you open it directly in Google Drive, you need to download the PDF file and open it with other programs / app, or you can open the PDF file with Microsoft Edge.
• As I am right-handed, this pattern is written with right-handed crocheters in mind, left-handed crocheters should crochet in the opposite direction.
• This pattern is suitable for advanced beginner crocheters, it has minimal shaping and made up from basic stitches. (p.s: will provide video tutorial for more advanced stitches such as FPedc, so don’t worry).
• This crochet pattern is mainly worked in rows, only the sleeves worked in rounds.

About this cardigan:
• This piece is worked top-down, we are going to start with making the back panels, front panels, then the sleeves
• As it is constructed top-down, you can decide the length of the cardigan by trying it on along the way.
• This piece will require some sewing; but the sewing will be very minimal because all the pieces are actually crocheted continuously by crocheting the parts into the finished panels (you will only need to sew the sides).
• This piece will have a round neckline with a front button-up closure.
• This piece will have drop shoulders, which means the front and back panel will be wider than your shoulder width.

p.s: I know some might say that my written pattern looks so intimidating because of the oh so many pages
and the supplementary calculator. But don’t worry, this long pdf file means there are tons of
step by step picture and diagrams to help you get through it.
++ with the excel spreadsheet, you won’t need to do math, the calculator will do it for you
(because I know, I am not the only one who hate math, and I am not the only one who are just too lazy to match gauge).

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A DIGITAL

Materials & tools needed:
• ANY YARN WEIGHT WORKS
• Crochet Hook that is the recommended size for your yarn weight and second crochet hook that is one size larger (one size larger means 3.00 mm and 3.50 mm, 4.00mm and 4.50 mm, etc).
• Scissors
• Stitch markers
• Measuring tape / ruler
• 4-6 buttons (recommended button size: diameter 1.2 cm – 2.5 cm)

Yarn usage based on my measurements (bust 81 cm, shoulder 38 cm)

  • DK weight yarn (women bust size S): cardigan length 34 cm, I used approximately 500g of #2 sport weight cotton blend yarn + 1 strand of mohair, used 3.50 mm hook
  • DK weight yarn (women bust size S): cardigan length 36 cm, I used approximately 420g of #2 sport weight wool blend yarn + 1 strand of mohair, used 4.00mm hook

Note: if you use pure cotton yarn, the weight will be doubled as it is heavier than cotton blend and acrylic blend.
(How much yarn you required is highly depends on the yarn weight, yarn type, crochet hook size, your tension, bust size, I put the detailed info on how much yarn does each testers used in the lookbook)

Yarn recommendation:

  • Pure cotton yarn is NOT recommended for this cardigan as the weight will be too heavy for you to wear the finished object comfortably
  • Heavier weight yarn will create wider grid, boxier and more constructed piece (more like a jacket).
  • Lighter weight yarn will create smaller grid and the drape will be flowy.
  • Please note that fluffy and fuzzy yarn (such as mohair, alpaca, etc) is not suitable for beginners because it will be harder to see and count the stitches

Crochet hook reference:
Note: You can make couple of gauge swatch to see which version you like the best.
• for those who has loose tension, I highly recommend you to use a smaller hook or use fluffy yarn (such as mohair, alpaca, wool) to avoid the panels ending up looking hole-y.
• for those who has tight tension, I highly recommend you to use a larger hook to avoid the stitches become too dense and the cardigan turn out too heavy.
