Gift Of Honey Hat
This is an extremely quick and easy way to achieve either a really striking 2 colour hat or a subtle but noticeable 1 colour version, and you will only ever be knitting with one colour at a time and slipping stitches along with the odd purl row. You can adjust both the circumference and the ‘slouch’ amount by adding / deducting repeats as explained within the Finished measurements section. The matching Cowl is also available.
This was actually knit for and inspired by my daughter as in design and colour combination, as handknit gifts for Christmas, and I think it can really lend to many different colour combo’s as my testers finished objects show and you can really make it fit your vision for it!
Knitting skills & techniques used:
Intermediate: Casting on, binding off, knitting, purling & slipping stitches purlwise. It also includes making decreases by way K2togethers / Slip Slip Knits in order to perform the Crown decreases.
Materials:
The following yarn usage amount is an approximate guide and is in fact a little over the actual amount I used, as I have applied a buffer in view of differences between knitters gauge and such, and so as to give you a few grams room. Also it is in view of making the hat as the pattern states (which is also what the numbers in the Finished measurements section are dictated by), if you choose to add extra repeats of any kind circumference or for ‘Slouch’ this would obviously effect the amounts of the required yarn:
Requires approx. 161 yards / 147 meters DK weight yarn. (This is the combined amount of both yarns required to make the 2 colour version, so this is also what you would need if you are making the 1 colour version. For my 1 colour sample I used Malabrigo Sock held double and used 167 meters / 183 yards but I did add extra repeats for ‘Slouch’)
For the Sample I used: Socks Yeah! DK – Coop Knits Yarns, 50g, 122 yards
(112 meters) But any wool based DK yarn of choice should work fine.
Yarn MC: Pigeon, (Brownish-Grey) (amount used 75 meters / 82 yards)
Yarn CC1: Prunus, (Shell Pink) (amount used 72 meters / 79 yards)
Needles: 3.75mm / US 5 for brim & 4mm / US 6 for main pattern
Either on 16” circular or longer cord length for using magic loop method or spread over DPN’s. Also, you’ll need DPN’s(Double pointed needles or long cord length for using magic loop method in the larger size for small circumference knitting as the crown decreases rapidly reduces the stitches.
Notions: 6 markers, & a unique BOR marker. Tape measure & tapestry needle / crochet hook to weave ends
Gauge:
4” (10 cm) on 4 mm/US 6 needles (after blocking). 24 sts (or 1 and a half reps of the 16 stitch Pattern Repeat) & 44 rounds (or 2 and 3 quarters of the 16 round Pattern Repeat). Pattern Repeat can be found on page 3, rounds 1 - 16.
(I would suggest casting on at least 2 of the 16 stitch repeats and working at least 2 of the 16 rounds - 2 repeats therefore, divided by a marker, and working through round1-16 twice - to have enough to measure, and also to start from the actual beginning of the repeat comfortably. My 1 colour sample was fingering held double so slightly different gauge meaning it is 0.5” wider. Incorrect Gauge can affect finished measurements / yarn usage.
Finished measurements & relating notes: To adjust for size, you can either add to / deduct from the cast on amount of stitches in multiples of 16 (there is a prompt to remind you of this at the start of ‘Instructions’) If you wish for this hat to be wider in circumference, you can add further repeats of the 16 stitch pattern, by simply adding additional multiples of 16 stitches to your cast on amount. In the same way you can deduct from your cast on amount in multiples of 16 if you wish to make a narrower hat. Knowing the gauge you’re getting for each 16 sts across by 16 rounds repeat from your swatch will help you with this deciding this, and also will help for whether you may decide to add more slouch to your hat (See Note under ‘Length before crown decreases’)
Circumference: 2 Colour version with 4x4 Ribbing (on smaller needles) 8.5” / 22cm lying flat (17”/ 43cm all around)
Length: 8” / 20cm Length before decreases: 6.5” / 17cm
(both from cast on edge so including the ribbing) This is adjustable by skipping / adding extra pattern repeats.
