Gift Wrap Romper & Sweater
Everyone knows babies are a gift! Welcome them to the world with this wrap style romper knit up in something soft for snuggling! Work it in a cotton blend with short sleeves for a summer baby or in soft wool with long pants for the colder months. When made from wool, the romper can double as a cover over cloth diapers.
Gift Wrap is written in 7 sizes from newborn - 2T. It is knit from the top down and fastens with buttons from chest to leg along a garter stitch band. Options are included for long or short legs and sleeves as well as a striped or solid body. This comprehensive pattern includes tips to help you get the best possible results and is simple enough for the advanced beginner.

Materials
Yarn: Note that in this pattern one leg is knit in the round and the other is knit flat. For this reason it is recommended you use a non pooling yarn if pooling bothers you.
In worsted to aran weight yarn you will need approximately 290 (310, 330, 360, 390, 430, 460) yards or 260 (280, 300, 325, 350, 390, 415) meters for a romper with short sleeves and short pants or 365 (390, 420, 455, 495, 540, 580) yards or 330 (350, 380, 410, 445, 485, 520) meters for a romper with long sleeves and pants. If you choose a contrasting color yarn for the button band and hem, it should be about 20% of your total yardage. If you choose to work the romper in stripes with CC borders your yarn should be divided as follows: color A=40%, color B=40%, CC=20%.
Needles: Double pointed needles (or needles appropriate for your preferred method of small circumference circular knitting) and circular needles in US sizes 8 (5mm) and 6 (4mm) or size required to obtain gauge and two sizes smaller. For NB and 3m a 30” length will do while a longer length will work better for the larger sizes. You will be knitting flat on these circular needles, so exact length is not critical, but you will be picking up a long border so be prepared to have a lot of sts on the needles at one point. You can read ahead to the directions for “BUTTON BAND” to see how many sts there will be for your size.
Notions: Scrap yarn, 4 stitch markers, darning needle for weaving in ends. Buttons should be about ⅝” - ¾” in diameter. For shorts you will need 8 (8, 8, 10, 10, 9, 11) buttons. For pants for will need 10 (11, 11, 11, 12, 12, 12) buttons.
ERRATA: changes in bold
If pattern download was bought before 4/22/10, under “WORKING THE GUSSET”: two knit symbols are missing
“PLACE MARKERS (RS): k24 (27, 29, 31, 32, 34, 36), pm, M1R, k4, M1L, pm, k33 (37, 39, 42, 43, 46, 48) pm, M1R, k4, M1L, pm, k7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10). 4 sts increased; 76 (84, 88, 94, 96, 102, 106)”
and when working the button band the first inc row, buttonhole row, and second inc row each state to work to 1 st before the marker, and k2tog. This should of course read:
“… k to 1 st before next marker, KFB, sm, KFB, k to 2 sts before the next marker, k2tog, sm, k to last st, sl1pwyif.”
