Gilly Hat
Inspired by the character Gilly from Game of Thrones, this hat features a single repeat of garland stitch against a stockinette background, making the lace the focal point. I opted to use 2 colors to make the lace stand out more, but you can use whatever colors you please! This hat knits up quickly in aran weight yarn, and makes a great last-minute gift or project to keep yourself warm this winter. Add a pom pom as a finishing touch, or don’t; this is an easy project to customize as you please!
Finished size: Approximately 22” circumference and 8” tall; fits most adult heads. Pattern includes notes about adjusting circumference. You can also adjust the length by working more or fewer rows in each stockinette section.
Gauge: 21 sts and 24 rnds=4” in stockinette stitch on larger size needle, knit in the round and blocked. Gauge is important for this one; getting a different gauge will affect the finished size of your hat, so make sure to take time to gauge swatch before beginning!
Materials: US size 7/4.5 mm and US size 8/5.0 mm needle (or size needed to make gauge, plus one size smaller), 16” circular and/or DPNs, tapestry needle, stitch marker.
Yarn: Sample shown used approximately 110 yds total of Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool XL in colors Charcoal (color A, 75 yds) and Cream (color B, 35 yds). If using a different yarn, you will need approximately 110-120 yds total of aran or worsted weight wool. Pattern is written for 2 colors, but you may use as many or as few colors as you please.
This is an advanced beginner pattern. You will need to be familiar with knitting in the round, knitting on DPNs, simple increases and decreases to knit this pattern. This pattern is written only; there are no charts.
