Crisp cotton knit into a cheerful gingham plaid is the focus of this colorful, durable placemat that protects surfaces from heat and spills. Since it’s cotton, it’s washable, too!

The mosaic pattern works up very quickly: Dishie yarn is held double-stranded, and there is only one active yarn per row (no stranding). A simple 6-row repeat is fun to work and looks impressive!

Color selection of the yarns is key: in addition to white or off-white, select two colors of the same tone but different values. In the featured sample, Dishie yarns in colorways “Mulberry” and “Lilac Mist” are combined with “Swan”.

Other Dishie colorway combinations I have used to create this simulated gingham are:

  • Black, Silver, and Swan
  • Blue, Silver, and Swan
  • Jalapeno, Honeydew, and Swan

An interesting neutral option would be:

  • Coffee, Linen, and Swan

You’ll need 1 skein of each of the 3 colors to create the placemat.

NOTE: Although this piece is worked flat (back and forth) a circular needle (US #10) is required.
