Ginny's Hat
The only daughter in a family full of sons, Ginny Weasley is a clever and powerful young witch who does not back down from a fight or a challenge. Like the other Weasleys, her wardrobe initially reflects the colorful handmade aesthetic of Molly Weasley. Costume designer Jany Temime says, “Of course there is a lot of knitting and crochet in Ginny’s wardrobes. For a long time, you could see that the mother was making clothes for her daughter.” As Ginny grows and matures throughout the series, her color palette shifts away from orange and more toward pink, green, and brown. Actress Bonnie Wright states, “I don’t think I would particularly wear the clothes that she wears. That’s probably kind of helpful for me, because when I put them on it’s a contrast to what I usually wear. It’s a step to becoming the character.”
Topped with a jaunty bow at the side, this hat is a replica of the one worn by Ginny during the second task of the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. A bit different than traditional crown decreasing, this hat is closed off with a three-needle bind off, creating a seam at the apex. Worked from the bottom up with garter ridges and stockinette in the round, easy eyelet rounds create a yarn-over track for weaving contrasting colors through.
