This pattern is made with size 10 crochet cotton---no specific brand of cotton was named in the pattern. Each ball of size 10 crochet cotton (the pattern calls for 3) is divided into three balls. The hat is then crocheted with three strands held together (hence why you must divide each ball into 3). You could probably get away with a fine fingering weight yarn rather than investing your time dividing size 10 crochet cotton into balls.
